Vice Minister of Education of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Secretary General of the King Abdulaziz Center for National Dialogue.

Obviously, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is not considered as being among the most tolerant and open societies of the world.

However the King Abdulaziz Center for National Dialogue in Riyadh is an interesting attempt to spread the culture of dialogue and establish it as a norm for general conduct on the level of the individual citizen, the family and society at large, but always reflecting adherence to the Islamic belief.

Although far from being a real dialogue between civilizations, I think the dissemination of the culture of dialogue, even only on a national level, may help to develop a culture of tolerance at large.

Some interesting topics discussed this last years (from a European point of view):

–          A vision for interaction with world cultures.

–          A call for renewal of religious discourse in accordance with the changing time

–          Emphasis given to the rejection of fatwas issued on an individual basis dealing with general questions, such as issues of war and peace. Standard of bodies qualified to issue fatwas and their methods must be improved.

–          Prohibition of violence against women.

The Center for National Dialogue (in the frame of above mentioned limitations) is supporting humanistic principles, such as human dignity, justice and tolerance.
